We left Monday morning for Ghost Towns.......had Karen's Mustang and 2 nice cameras for taking photos.......2 days later we had sunburns, watery eyes, a very dirty car, relief that we didn't get stuck in loose gravel on the side of a mountain and over 500 pictures.
It was great looking at all the old buildings and learning a little about the history of the towns. Some of the most amazing things to me were just how they managed to get into these towns in the first place. The roads going there now are not the best let alone 150 years ago.......there were no roads and it is thick forest and 2 of the towns were really way up in the mountains.
Virgina City and Nevada City are tourist traps now......they took advantage of the location and the history and now have shops and restaurants and things like running water and electricity. Bannack and Garnet are much more left as it was, however they are doing work and trying to save all the buildings.
I couldn't pick a favorite one they were all different.....there are also a lot more to go and check out. We drove about 600 miles in 2 days searching out these towns. We did get a nice room in Helena for the night and got back to civilization.
The people that came to this state were tough people.........the weather, terrain and just getting here was almost impossible. I admire them greatly.....seemed like most died in their 30's and 40's trying to make a life for them and their families.
We hope to get to more of these towns over the next year.........so interesting.
